Microformats and Web design

Microformats refer to a standard that makes use of existing standards used in HTML to help make data on your website readable by humans and machines, with the emphasis on putting humans first. Microformats are not a new language or even a new way of doing things, they are more a new way of using what already exists. For example a lot of web sites have contact details of various people and companies displayed on then in a way that makes perfect sense when viewed by a human. The problem with this is that machines, such as search engines, find it a lot harder to make sense of the same information. Using Microformats means that machines can easily understand the information you have without compromising on the readability by humans. This is achieved by assigning pre-defined classes to elements within your HTML. This means the appearance of your page is not changed but the HTML can easily be parsed by a machine to extract important information. Microformats currently exist for contact details (hCard), events (hCalendar) and reviews (hReview). If you have this sort of information on your web site making use of Microformats could help search engines make more sense of you site. There are also a number of plugins for popular web browsers that allow you do make use of Microformats. For example you could export contact information found on a page straight to your address book or an event straight to your calendar.
