The importance of valid mark-up in Web Design

By Green Media of Green Media

It is more than straightforward to create a website using basic HTML but why should extra effort be put in to make it valid and how will it help a site?

The simple answer is that a site created using valid mark-up and styles will automatically be well on the way to being more accessible, more consistent across browsers and friendlier to search engine spiders.

However ensuring that all your HTML or XHTML has closing tags and the correct attributes is only the start. Care should be taken to make proper use of the spirit of
HTML not just the letter of the law.

For example title tags are often miss-used. Titles should be in order of descending importance, much like a book or article and lists should genuinely be marked up as lists and not left as a collection of short paragraphs.

Using the h1-hx range of title tags as an example it is easy to make the mistake of using whichever tag, h3 for example, fits in with the design from the web designer.

Marking some text as h3 tells browsers, screen readers, search spiders and anything else that reads HTML that the text in question is less important than any text surrounded by an h1 or h2 tag. With this in mind h2 titles should only follow an h1 tag with appropriate use of CSS made to alter the appearance if required.

Another type of tag regularly miss-used is the tag for tables. Often used as a quick and easy way to create layouts it should only really be used for displaying tabular data such as sports results or recordings from an experiment.

So how do you get valid mark-up without affecting the design you are trying to create? CSS can be used to style any element on the page so just because you have some text marked-up as h1 doesn’t mean it has to be the largest text on the page. In fact by using correct HTML simply for mark-up and CSS for all the design elements you are far more likely to get a consistent look throughout any site.
